LEARNING GAME DESIGNER , Comparative Media Studies/Writing-MIT Scheller Teacher Education Program (MIT-STEP)/Education Arcade , to work on projects that include desktop simulation games, augmented reality game construction kits, and playful group simulations for mobile devices. Projects range from early concept prototypes to fully implemented products. MIT-STEP/The Education Arcade makes playful, powerful learning experiences, including award-winning learning games and simulations for youth to adults. Responsibilities include collaborating on clarify goals of the game, simulation, or game/simulation construction toolkit; designing games which thoughtfully integrate learning goals, pedagogical approaches, and game mechanics; organizing and conducting iterative user-testing to understand areas for improvement; coordinating with project team to develop and execute research around game designs; communicating with stakeholders to ensure designs meet project goals, sharing ongoing progress/outcomes and maintaining documentation as needed; gaining technological literacy to leverage affordances (and mitigate limitations) of the technology platform; and working with a technical team (though coding skills/experience is not a requirement).
Job Requirements REQUIRED : B.A./B.S.; five year's relevant experience that includes game design, preferably showing a range of projects with a playful approach to integrating education/learning into gameplay; ability to acquire new content knowledge to inform game design; comfort developing games for STEM topics, including math, physics, computer science, and AI; willingness to be flexible and jump in as needed and to work independently and on teams; and strong written and oral communication skills. PREFERRED : experience in formal/informal educational settings; experience developing instruments and performing data collection, data analysis, and academic writing as part of a research project/team; ability to apply user-centered design principles and provide art direction; leadership/mentoring skills; basic project management skills; and creative writing, storytelling, and video editing skills.
