The Department of Statistics and Probability at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for a continuing-system academic specialist with a data science focus.
The successful candidate will work with multi-disciplinary teams to develop, coordinate, and teach data science courses for undergraduate students, will help to develop and deploy assessments of student learning outcomes, and will join a large and active group of teaching faculty focused on instructional excellence in the mathematical sciences. The successful candidate will also assist in advising students in the growing undergraduate majors and minor in data science.
MSU introduced two data science majors and a data science minor in 2019. The programs draw centrally on the expertise of three departments, Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering; Computer Science and Engineering; and Statistics and Probability. Students enrolled in these programs will experience innovative curriculum and pedagogy, and the successful candidate for this search will have the opportunity to provide leadership in curriculum development and pedagogy.
Candidates must have a master’s or PhD degree in a relevant discipline, an understanding of statistics and probability at the master’s level, instructional excellence at the undergraduate level, a demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive and equitable learning environment, and experience with student-centered pedagogical methods.
To be eligible for consideration, applications must include a letter detailing the applicant’s interest in and fit for the position, a curriculum vitae, a statement describing the applicant’s experience in data science teaching and experience with and plans for creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive classroom. Applicants should also arrange for three letters of reference to be sent which address the applicant’s teaching and work in data science.
Inquiries are welcome by contacting the search committee chair Prof. Vince Melfi through email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
