The Child Life program at the Maternal Child and Adolescent Center (MCA) is a division of Department of Pediatrics at Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California. The Maternal, Child and Adolescent Center is a comprehensive HIV medical and research program. The Child Life program provides a safe, comfortable and learning environment for children brought to the clinic either for their own care or the care of a parent or sibling.
This Program is open to all children whose mother, father or sibling attend their medical or research appointments. Because HIV care visits (pediatric and adult) are comprehensive (patients are seen by their primary care provider, nurse, nutritionist, case manager, and sometimes the pharmacist and social worker), they are very time consuming. Our children patient population need a safe place to stay while they wait to be seen or while they wait for a parent or sibling to be seen. This program is essential to retain HIV+ parents in care because they have few or no options for child care outside of MCA and would therefore not be able to keep their own appointments.
MCA is looking for an energetic and creative individual to primarily supervise and maintain the playroom for children patient population. The Child Life Specialist must be able to provide educational assistance in reading, math, and science projects.  They must be able to develop and teach arts and crafts projects as well as develop recreational activities. Spanish-speaking is a plus. Plan and implement child-centered events in or outside the clinic. Responsible for coordinating at least three patient, family friendly events (i.e., Spring, Halloween, and Winter Celebrations) a year. He/she is supervised by the Mental Health Program Manager and works closely with the mental health team on patient outreach for clinic educational or supportive groups.
The hourly pay rate is $16.71. The position is funded by a grant or contract and maybe funded by a subsequent grant or contract. The position is contingent upon receipt of the necessary funding from any subsequent grant or contract to continue employment.  Â
The clinic is open Mondays-Fridays from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm.  The Child Life Area is available from 8:30am-4:30pm. The Maternal Child Clinic is located at LAC+USC Medical Center, 2010 Zonal Avenue, OPD 5 West, Los Angeles, CA 90033.Â
The qualified candidate must successfully complete both USC background screening and LACâs background screening and health screening.
