Job Summary: The Physical Education Teacher is responsible for the physical education of youth.
Additional Department Summary: The WOW Physical Education Teacher is responsible for the physical education of youth within a self-contained residential treatment program for emotionally disturbed female juvenile offenders located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This person is responsible for supporting an instructional program in accordance with program policies and procedures as well as the Alabama Course of Study. This person will provide one hour of physical education each weekday and other summer enrichment activities as determined by the Education Coordinator and Program Director. In order to promote youth and staff safety, this person will cooperate with the program safety procedures. The WOW Physical Education Teacher is a member of the therapeutic community and must utilize therapeutic skills and techniques learned during ongoing training to deescalate youth experiencing crisis.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and a certification in physical education.
Skills and Knowledge: Ability to learn and apply various behavioral techniques related to the care and rehabilitation of adolescent females. Applicant must demonstrate use of strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and the ability to remain calm during a crisis. Ability to work with diverse populations, professionalism to meet obligations through efficient work habits such as, meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, and maintaining effective and efficient record keeping procedures.
Preferred Qualifications: Master of Arts in Education, Control Tactics certification, and experience working with delinquent mentally ill adolescent females in a residential setting.
