Job Summary: The assistant teacher is an integral part of the classroom teaching team and provides a safe and nurturing environment for children ages two months to five years. The assistant teacher works closely with the lead classroom teacher in planning for, and managing, a classroom of children, assuming the lead role with the children when the lead teacher is working with students, parents, administrators and/or faculty.
Additional Department Summary: The auxiliary teacher will assist with implementing a model pre-kindergarten program for a group of children and provide support to lead teacher with the following: planning and implementing appropriate activities for children, working with faculty and administration, working with families of young children, and modeling evidence-based practices in the classroom for early educator observers, graduate, and undergraduate students. Works approximately 187 days per year with 180 days of classroom instruction and 7 days for professional development. This position will be contingent on student enrollment, grant requirements, and funding.
Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Associate’s degree in early childhood education, human development and family studies, or education and one (1) year of early childhood (birth to third grade) classroom experience.
Skills and Knowledge: Ability to provide support in an early childhood classroom and deliver high-quality care for young children. Proficiency in following guidance of lead teacher to execute grant classroom requirements, assessment tasks, and organization of confidential documents is required. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work with diverse populations.
Preferred Qualifications: Associate’s degree preferred in early childhood education, child development, or a closely related field. Pursing a bachelor’s degree and Alabama Class B or A Early Childhood Certification (Birth – 3rd grade). Two or more years of early childhood assistant teaching experience and management experience which includes work with birth through five year olds. Experience with developmentally appropriate, play-based curriculum and early childhood center oversight. Knowledge of NAEYC or Quality Stars experience preferred. CPR Certification preferred.
