FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Our faculty specialize in nurturing the intellectual, social and emotional lives of young children and early adolescents. Social justice, community, and advocacy are at the core of our work. As the power of diversity involves adults as well as children, we work deliberately to create a community that is broadly inclusive and reflects our multicultural society. We hold steadfast to our mission and credo.
The math curriculum is a study of arithmetic, geometry, and elementary algebra. Topics include: fractions, decimals, percents, metric measurement, two-dimensional geometry, and probability.
The science curriculum is an earth science study that focuses on the sun as our source of energy. It includes a study of light, the earth's atmosphere, global climate change, and groundwater pollution.
Teachers should have a background in a materials-based, discovery approach to mathematics and/or science and be sensitive to individual needs within the group setting. There is a focus on group work, problem solving activities, and discovery-based learning.
Classroom Work: The Math/Science teacher is responsible for teaching math and science to a group of 18-24 students. Along with the humanities teacher, the math/science teacher is an advisor and homeroom teacher to each student in the group. In working with children and evaluating their work, teachers are expected to consider their social-emotional growth as well as their intellectual development.
Work with Adults: The Math/Science Teacher is a member of a classroom team responsible for the academic and non-academic needs of students. This work includes communicating with parents and others who support each child’s learning and growth. Teachers participate in weekly math/science meetings and bi-weekly staff meetings after school and are required to be available for conferences with parents when needed. Narrative reports are written twice a year, and joint family conferences occur at least two times per a year.
Math/Science teachers work under the supervision of the Math/Science Coordinator and the Division Head.
