Bard College seeks an Assistant Teacher for a K-5 program to begin as soon as possible. The program offers staff, faculty and community members a high-quality, nature-based, after-school education program at the Montgomery Place Campus. The Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC) is for children in grades K-5 and runs from 3:30 - 6 daily. The assistant teacher will support and collaborate with the lead teacher daily, reporting to work from 3-6 pm. This is a part-time position that goes from September - June.
Responsibilities
- Assist the lead teacher in all daily activities including hiking, climbing, making forest discoveries, crafting, holding group discussions, creating and delivering community-building exercises.
- Account for the physical safety and security of all participants by responding appropriately to students' requests, being aware of physical surroundings, accounting for the whereabouts and wellbeing of all participants at all times.
- Account for the emotional wellbeing of participants by engaging in meaningful discussion, building relationships, assisting with conflict resolution.
- Assist the lead teacher in working toward building community within the group.
- Keep track of, organize and store supplies as requested by the lead teacher.
- Take documentation (photo/video) and record children's observations as requested by the lead teacher.
- Be on time and present, minimizing engagement with screens.
- Demonstrated interest in working with children
- Skilled in conflict resolution strategies
- Comfortable working outside in all weather, and able to meet the physical demands that an outdoor position requires
