Job Summary/Basic Function:
Reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Provost, and Dean of the College, the Vice Dean for Teacher Education and School and Community Partnerships will provide collaborative, imaginative, strategic leadership and advocacy for teacher education practice, policy, and research at the College. The person in this role will represent the College, and take a leadership role in, city, state, and national partnerships, policy deliberations, and scholarly professional organizations. Across these responsibilities, the Vice Dean for Teacher Education and School and Community Partnerships will support and further the College’s commitment to public education as a democratic project and its threefold commitment to teaching as inquiry, teaching as curriculum-making, and teaching for social justice. In company with other College leadership, and the College as a whole, diversity, equity, and inclusion will be central to the Vice Dean’s work.
The Vice Dean for Teacher Education and School and Community Partnerships will take advantage of the current moment not only to support but to enhance teacher education activity at the College, including support for early, mid, and late-career teachers, catalyzing new visions, innovations, and increased ambitions among the diverse and distinguished group of TC teacher educators, and will take the lead in developing our partnerships and initiatives in support of New York City children, youth, families, and communities, in particular, those, primarily Black, Brown, Asian, Indigenous, poor, disabled and newly immigrated, who are and have historically been most underserved. Equally critically, the Vice Dean for Teacher Education and School and Community Partnerships will support existing lines of research and scholarship, including public scholarship, in teacher education and related areas of professional practice and study, and will engage faculty in the development of new research initiatives.
Additionally, the Vice Dean for Teacher Education and School and Community Partnerships will lead in the reimagination and support of programmatic evaluation of teacher education at the College and will oversee the activities and initiatives of the Office of Teacher Education and other centers and offices that support teacher education.
Responsibilities:
- Partner with stakeholders across the College to continue developing a vision for teacher education that includes new directions for TC Teacher Education programs; engage in local and national education policy discussions.
- Raise external funds to support Teacher Education initiatives.
- Establish and maintain productive partnerships with our community, including P-12 partners, particularly our college partnership with NYC Community School District #4, NYC Public Schools, New York State Education Department, AAQEP and/or other accreditation agencies as needed, professional organizations and associations, and our many clinical placement sites.
- Participate in local, regional, and national associations and networks; stay abreast of current and pending policy initiatives; engage in and represent TC in discussions and debates about the future of the field, including with respect to governance, accreditation, and the like; communicate with and solicit participation from the teacher education community at TC.
- Partner with other College stakeholders to continue reviewing, re-thinking, and ongoing redesign of the teacher education programs.
- Lead the Teacher Educators at TC Collaborative to develop policies and evaluate the effects of proposed and/or existing policies.
- Attend regular Provost Leadership meetings.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience as a PK-12 educator of at least 3 years and as a university-based teacher educator of at least seven years. Earned doctorate from an accredited institution.
- Earned tenure and the rank of Associate or Full Professor at a prior institution
- A strong history in the field of teacher education, as a scholar-practitioner, including a record of leadership (in program, institutional, and/or regional contexts).
- A strong scholarly record and an agenda going forward for research in teacher education.
- Commitment to and demonstrated ability to cultivate strong, just, and innovative partnerships with schools, districts, communities, and city.
- Experience creating reciprocal and sustainable partnerships with schools and/or districts, and ideas for creating new opportunities for student funding
- Broad knowledge of history, debates, complexities, and nuances of teacher education in the U.S.
- Strong commitment to and experience in public education.
- Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of assets-oriented, culturally sustaining, inclusive pedagogies
- Collaborative, collegial ethos and skills who can lead faculty collaborative decision-making and be a strong advocate for teacher educators at the College
- Demonstrated effectiveness in leadership that enhances diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Demonstrated excellence in graduate student education/mentoring.
- Demonstrated expertise in grant writing and oversight.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with higher education faculty affairs and administration.
- Experience in international educational partnerships.
- Expertise in fundraising.
- Experience creating or working in residency and/or apprenticeship programs
- Experience with teacher induction.
- Experience creating reciprocal and sustainable partnerships with schools and/or districts, and ideas for creating new opportunities for student funding.
Salary Range:
$150,000.00 - $170,000.00

Hybrid/Remote
